Taking initiative: Voters in 11 states will face ballot measures related to church-state separation

October 2024 Church & State Magazine October 1, 2024 Story by Liz Hayes

This article link is to Church & State Magazine a publication of American United for Separation of Church & State. The article is about ballot initiatives in 11 states, including Missouri. The Missouri case gained support from Americans United and The National Women’s Law Center because the Missouri anti-abortion law had a religious basis.

“As 13 Missouri faith leaders have made clear in a lawsuit brought by Americans United and the National Women’s Law Center, abortion bans like Missouri’s violate church-state separation because they enshrine one narrow religious view of abortion into law. As Americans United President and CEO Rachel Laser has repeatedly said, religious freedom requires that everyone be able to make their own decisions about their own bodies based on their own beliefs.”

After the ballot measure was approved there was an attempt to obstruct the measure forming appearing on the ballot by:

“Cole County Circuit Judge Christopher Limbaugh (a cousin of the late conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh) issued that ruling in a case brought by the Christian Nationalist group Thomas More Society on behalf of anti-abortion lawmakers and activists.”

The Missouri case had an eleventh-hour Missouri Supreme Court decision that stopped the obstructionists from preventing the amendment from being on the State Ballot.

Anti-abortion organizations do not want to vote on abortion because they know they will lose.

The Christian Nationalist movement is a powerful threat to democracy in the US.

US Senate Missouri

Lucas Kunce

Josh Hawley

I live in St Louis MO, and strongly oppose Senator from Missouri, Josh Hawley, remaining in office. I am very happy to see Lucas Kunce opposing Hawley. And it appears Kunce can defeat Hawley.

To quote John Danforth, a member of the highly respected Danforth family, who has supported many causes and institutions in St. Louis.

“Supporting Josh Hawley … was the worst decision I’ve ever made in my life,” former Missouri Sen. John Danforth told The Associated Press on Thursday [Jan 8, 2021, 2 days after J6]. “He has consciously appealed to the worst. He has attempted to drive us apart and he has undermined public belief in our democracy. And that’s great damage.”

“Aside from President Donald Trump, who roiled up supporters just before they stormed the Capitol, no politician has been more publicly blamed for Wednesday’s unprecedented assault on American democracy than Hawley. ” AP Jan 8, 2021

None of the election deniers, obstructors and subverters should remain in office.
